Diagnosing a flat battery
Before connecting jump leads, the operator checks whether the battery is simply flat or has failed entirely. A slow clicking sound when you turn the key usually points to low charge, while a single loud click or complete silence can mean a bigger fault such as a failed starter motor or a blown fuse, in which case jump-starting won't help and a different diagnosis is needed.
The operator also checks the terminals for corrosion, a build-up of white or green residue can stop current flowing even with a healthy battery underneath. Dashboard behaviour is another clue, dim or flickering interior lights that struggle to come on at all usually mean the battery itself is the issue, while lights that work normally but the engine still won't turn over point elsewhere in the system.
If the vehicle has an alarm or immobiliser that's also affected by the low charge, the operator will check whether this needs resetting once power is restored, since some systems lock out briefly after a deep discharge.
The jump start procedure
We use a portable jump pack rather than another vehicle wherever possible, since it avoids the risk of connecting two cars incorrectly. The pack is connected to the correct terminals in the right order, positive first, negative to an earth point away from the battery itself, and left to charge the battery for a short period before the engine is attempted.
Once running, the vehicle is left idling to let the alternator start rebuilding charge before you drive off. The operator will also check that no accessories, headlights, heated seats, the radio, are drawing extra current during this initial charging period, since that can undo the benefit of the jump pack before the alternator has caught up.
On vehicles with a battery located in the boot rather than under the bonnet, there is usually a dedicated jump terminal near the engine bay for safe connection, and the operator will use this rather than trying to reach the battery itself.
Why batteries fail
Car batteries typically last three to five years, and cold weather is the most common trigger for failure since low temperatures reduce the chemical reaction that generates current, right when the engine needs more power to turn over. Other causes include a vehicle left unused for several weeks, short journeys that never let the alternator fully recharge the battery, or a parasitic drain from something left switched on, an interior light or a dashcam wired incorrectly.
Age is also cumulative, a battery that has been jump-started once before is statistically more likely to need a full replacement soon rather than continuing to hold charge reliably, since the underlying chemistry degrades a little further each time it's deeply discharged.
Roof racks, tow bars and aftermarket alarms wired into the electrical system can also add a small constant drain that shortens battery life over time, particularly if they're not fitted or wired correctly.
Testing after the jump
A jump start gets the engine running but doesn't tell you whether the battery is actually healthy. Our operator carries a load tester to check the battery's condition once the engine is running, measuring how well it holds charge under load rather than just whether it shows a voltage reading.
If the test shows the battery is failing, we'll tell you rather than leave you to find out at the next cold start. We'll also check the alternator's charging output at the same time, since a battery that keeps going flat can sometimes be a symptom of an alternator not charging properly rather than the battery itself being at fault.
Fitting a replacement on site
Where the test confirms the battery needs replacing, we carry common battery sizes and can fit a replacement at the roadside, your home or workplace. Fitting involves disconnecting the old battery in the correct order, negative first, cleaning the terminals if needed, fitting the new battery, and in many modern vehicles registering the new battery with the car's electrical system so the alternator charges it correctly.
If your specific battery size isn't carried on the van, the operator will source it and return, or advise on the nearest fitting option. We'll also dispose of the old battery responsibly through a licensed recycling route rather than leaving it with you, since old batteries are classed as hazardous waste.
After fitting, we'll also check that the clock, radio presets and any other settings that reset on disconnection are working as expected, and let you know if the vehicle needs a short drive to relearn idle settings after the battery change.
