Stay Safe First
A motorway breakdown is one of the most dangerous situations a driver can face. Vehicles travel at 70mph just feet from you, and a single moment of panic can put you in real danger. Your first priority must always be your own safety — not the vehicle, not your luggage, not getting back on the road quickly. Take a breath, switch on your hazard warning lights immediately, and assess the situation calmly.
Keep your seatbelt on while you decide what to do next. If you have passengers, ask them to stay calm and remain in the vehicle until you give a clear instruction. Do not get out on the carriageway side under any circumstances, and never attempt to fix the vehicle yourself on a live motorway — even a flat tyre. Move to the Hard Shoulder
If your vehicle is still moving, try to reach the next exit, motorway service area, or — failing that — the hard shoulder. Pull as far left as possible, ideally with your wheels turned slightly away from traffic. Stop close to an SOS phone if you can, because they connect directly to Highways England control and they can pinpoint your exact location.
On smart motorways without a permanent hard shoulder, look for the next Emergency Refuge Area (ERA) — these are clearly marked orange bays roughly every mile to two miles. If you cannot reach an ERA and your vehicle becomes stranded in a live lane, switch on hazard lights, leave the vehicle by the left-hand door if it is safe, and move behind the barrier. Then call 999 immediately. Highways England will set the overhead signs to close your lane and protect you.

Once you are safely behind the barrier (or in a service area), call a recovery service. What NOT to Do
Do not attempt to change a tyre, jump-start the engine, or look under the bonnet on the hard shoulder. Do not place a warning triangle on a motorway — it is actually illegal because of how dangerous it is to walk back along live carriageway. Do not return to the vehicle to retrieve items unless it is genuinely safe to do so. Do not stand in front of, behind, or beside the vehicle where you could be struck by debris or another car.
Also, do not accept help from strangers who pull up behind you. Genuine recovery operators are dispatched — they do not cruise the motorway looking for jobs. If someone stops, politely thank them and wait for the operator you booked.
