Why Eastbourne breakdowns need a genuine tow

Plenty of breakdown callouts end with a jump start or a temporary fix. Ours do not, because the vehicles we collect are non-runners: dead batteries that will not hold charge, gearbox faults, timing belt failures, or cars that simply will not turn over near the Sovereign Harbour marina or on the seafront by the pier.

We check the vehicle briefly on arrival, but the plan from the first phone call is a tow. That means we bring a flatbed or spec-lift truck suited to the car, not a van with jump leads.

If you break down on a road with no hard shoulder, such as sections of the A22 or A27, get out of the vehicle on the passenger side away from moving traffic if it is safe to do so, and stand behind a barrier or well back from the carriageway. Put your hazard lights on and, if you carry one, a warning triangle a reasonable distance behind the car on a straight stretch.

On seafront roads or in town, it is often safer to stay with the vehicle and keep doors locked until our driver calls to confirm they are close, particularly after dark. Whatever the location, keeping your phone charged and reachable makes the handover much quicker once the truck arrives.
